How the child's head passes through the pelvis during birth can be shown clearly with this Erler-Zimmer birthing model. The pelvic skeleton consists of movable hip bones with a flexibly mounted symphysis, a sacrum with a flexible coccyx and two flexible lumbar vertebrae. The fetal skull is attached to the base board via a metal spiral tube so that it moves freely.

The model is aimed at midwives, birth preparation and medical training. It makes the mechanics of birth and the course of the birth canal understandable on a movable pelvis, whether in a course or when advising expectant parents.

  • shows the birth canal and the passage of the fetal head through the female pelvis
  • movable hip bones with a flexibly mounted symphysis
  • sacrum with flexible coccyx and two flexible lumbar vertebrae
  • fetal skull guided freely via a metal spiral tube
  • mounted on a base board, stable for demonstration

The value of this birthing model lies in the mobility of pelvis and skull at once. Because the head can be guided freely, the rotations of the child's skull through the individual pelvic planes can be shown step by step. The flexible symphysis illustrates how the bony birth canal gives way during labour.

For birth preparation and midwifery training, this birthing model is available at saneq.
