Moxa sticks are a central product in the field of moxibustion, a traditional Chinese therapy. They usually consist of compressed mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) and are used on or near the skin to deliver heat to specific acupuncture points. Moxa sticks differ in diameter, length and blend ratio, which affects the burning time and intensity of the heat.
Typical moxa sticks have diameters of approximately 1.8 cm to 2.5 cm and lengths of around 20 cm. The blend ratio, for example 3:1, 10:1, 20:1 or 35:1, describes the ratio of mugwort to other components and influences the burning properties. Pack sizes usually vary between 4 and 10 sticks per pack. Some moxa sticks produce smoke when burning, which should be taken into account during use.
The selection of the appropriate moxa stick depends on the individual treatment requirements, the desired burning time and the preferred handling. Well-known brands such as GUOYIYAN, Hwato, ZhongYan and Sennenkyu offer different variants that can differ in quality and composition. Moxa sticks are an important aid for therapists and users who practise traditional Chinese moxibustion.
